JAMES L. MARTIN, III '62

James L. Martin III died of kidney disease October 21, 2024 at his home in Kailua-Kona, HI.  He was the fourth in his family to attend Princeton, following his father, grandfather and grand uncle.

He attended Thomas A. Edison High School in Tulsa, OK, where his special interests were creative writing, theater and biology.  At Princeton he roomed with Frank Carr and Arnold Zwicky and was a member of Campus Club.  He worked at the Nassau Lit, performed as a guest artist in senior plays at Miss Fine’s School and majored in biology.

After graduating Jim worked as a lab technician for Exxon Production Research and at the UCLA Brain Research Institute.  He earned his Ph.D. in physiology from Baylor College of Medicine in 1976 and went on to a career that began in teaching and medical research and morphed into software engineering.  He met his wife Deborah Hayes while teaching at Baylor; they married in 1981 and moved to Colorado two years later where they spent 40 years before retiring to Hawaii in 2023.  Jim worked as a research scientist and software engineer for a variety of corporations including Advance Geophysical Corp and Sienna Imaging, Inc.  Describing his mountain life in Colorado for our 25th reunion book, he wrote “we watch birds and try to keep the elk, chipmunks and rabbits from eating the garden.”

Jim enjoyed a lifelong association with Princeton. He attended our 25th Reunion with his father who was there to mark his 50th. Ten years later, Jim returned for our 35th Reunion, in part to support his now frail father's at his 60th.  Jim enjoyed annual luncheons with the Denver Princeton Alumni group, and maintained a lifelong friendship with Arnold Zwicky.  Arnold's remembrance of Jim can be found at https://arnoldzwicky.org/2024/10/23/goodbye-jim/.

In addition to Deborah, Jim is survived by siblings Anne Hill, John Martin and Ross Martin.
